The Desktop and Laptop Option is VERITAS' next-generation technology for desktop and laptop backup, which is now currently integrated into both NetBackup and Backup Exec. The Desktop and Laptop Option has the capability to provide continuous or real-time, disk-based backup for users at the edge of the enterprise. It has the capability to synchronize files between desktops and laptops that are owned by the same person, allowing folks who work from home with a different system not to have to worry about carrying around a laptop or having to find some way to transport files. As files change on one system, they are copied to a common share. The user can then recover that file to their system at any location (as long as the software is installed and configured on the other system) and continue working. By providing simple user-based recovery, IT resources are saved and interaction with end users is limited. The single location for backup of multiple systems also reduces the total cost of overall disk consumption. The new Desktop and Laptop Option was designed to integrate into current server backup processes and take advantage of existing network storage.
